有條蛇常被踩到

（A snake was trodden on by so many people ），

跑去跟宙斯抱怨

（that it went and complained to Zeus）。

宙斯說：「如果第一個人踩到你，你咬了他一口

（" If you had bitten the first man who trod on you, " said Zeus,），

那之後就不大敢踩到你了

（" the next one would have thought twice about doing it."）。」

能勇敢反抗第一個來攻擊你的人，其他人就不大敢來欺負你了

（Those who stand up to a first assailant make others afraid of them.）。
