有條蛇常被踩到

(A snake was trodden on by so many people ),

跑去跟宙斯抱怨

(that it went and complained to Zeus)。

宙斯說:「如果第一個人踩到你,你咬了他一口

(" If you had bitten the first man who trod on you, " said Zeus,),

那之後就不大敢踩到你了

(" the next one would have thought twice about doing it.")。」


能勇敢反抗第一個來攻擊你的人,其他人就不大敢來欺負你了

(Those who stand up to a first assailant make others afraid of them.)。
